What should you do if you are in an auto accident?
Now that New York has opened up social distancing restrictions, and with winter around the corner, there will be more cars on the road and, in turn, more accidents. If you are injured in an accident, your first priority should be to get medical care for anyone who may have been injured. You should also consider the following:
- Report the accident (and get the name of the person to whom the report is made, e.g., name and title);
- Identify witnesses;
- Take Photographs (both of your injuries and of the accident scene);
- Notify your insurance company; and
- Complete a No-Fault Claim.
Lastly, you should also contact a lawyer as soon as possible. The attorneys at Greene Reid & Pomeroy can help you navigate the aftermath of a personal injury accident. There are several traps for the unwary. Even if you are not sure if you have a claim, it does not hurt to call. There is little to lose and much to gain. Put our experience to work for you!
Selecting the Right Nursing Home
Our firm has been helping families victimized by nursing home abuse and neglect for decades. Tragically, elderly nursing home residents frequently suffer malnutrition, dehydration, pressure sores, injuries from falls and over-medication at an alarming rate. The following is a list of the Top 5 things that your family may want to consider to select the right nursing home or assisted living facility for your loved one.
Is A Nursing Home Our Only Option?
Before you decide that a nursing home is the best option for your loved one, confirm that
your loved one’s medical condition has been carefully and thoroughly evaluated. Make sure that there is an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Consider whether your loved one might be able to remain at home as long as the proper support system is in place. Consider whether there is a lesser restrictive measure available prior to placement at a skilled nursing facility.
What Are the Nursing Home Options?
If it is determined that nursing home care is needed, perform research on what nursing
homes are available in your area. Think location, location, location! The nursing home residents who receive the best care are often the residents who have regular visitors who ask questions and demonstrate concern.
“Nursing Home Compare” Website
Visit the “Nursing Home Compare” website at www.Medicare.gov/NHCompare/home
You can search for nursing homes by state, city, county, zip code or by name. Nursing homes are inspected annually by government investigators and certified to make sure they meet certain state and federal health and safety requirements. The website will let you search to see how the facilities in your area compare with one another and also contain information about a facility’s federal and state licensure actions, certification status and more!
Take a Personal Tour
Most nursing homes have admissions workers who will be happy to schedule a tour for
you. It is also helpful to visit in early evening so you can observe the caregiving activities on both day and evening shifts. Ask for a list of activities provided that week and see if you can attend a meal. Often, the assistance provided by the staff to residents in the dining room is a good reflection of the staffing patterns in the facility.
Visit Often
Once your loved one enters the facility, you and your family members should visit as much as possible to assure that good care is being provided. If the nursing staff knows that the care of your loved one is a very high priority with you family, and that members of your family will be at the facility on a regular basis to check up on the care, you may significantly reduce the risk of neglect and abuse.
